“Breaking story” is your number one job when you’re working in a TV writers room. We’re proud to introduce a brand new 7-week lab that will show you, in a hands-on way, how it’s done – both for your script and for others.
To “break story” means coming up with all the scenes (the beats) for the episode and making sure that each scene, and the structure of the episode is properly vetted. When working on a show the writer pitches his/her episode out to the room, scene by scene, and then the writing staff weighs in with fixes and improvements to solve any story or structure problems.
Kevin Townsley has set up shows at SyFy, Crackle, Pivot, Sony, CBS Studios, Warner Brothers, FOX 21 and Fremantle. He has worked with Silver Pictures (Joel Silver), Divide Pictures (Milo Ventimiglia), That's Wonderful Productions (Jim Parson) and Wonderland Sound and Vision (McG) just to name a few.
This course mimics that process, but for your pilot. So, you will:
Have six other writers help you figure out story structure, beats, transitions, and act outs
Learn invaluable lessons on all those core elements
Learn how to troubleshoot a story that isn’t working
Get feedback on how you pitch ideas and conduct yourself in a room.
This lab is run like a simulated writers room and is invaluable preparation for life as a TV writer since a huge part of the job is pitching ideas every day.
You would never build a house without proper blue prints. Pilot writing is no different. You must lay the proper foundation for your show or it will collapse under the weight of the notes and it all starts with a sound structure. Sign up today!
